Juicing With Seasonals: Winter

Juicing is a fantastic way to take advantage of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. When incorporated into your daily eating habits, it can be a highly effective way to maintain healthy eating habits. Using fresh produce results in the best-tasting drinks, but during the winter months, many fruits and vegetables are out of season. Fortunately, there are many other fruits and vegetables that can be juiced and enjoyed in winter as well.

FRUITS

Winter months can make it hard to find fruits in season, but fruits like apples, pears, persimmons, and pomegranates, as well as other fruits like blood oranges, mandarins, lemons, and bananas, are great examples of seasonal fruits for juicing. For a crisp, tart juice, combine oranges and apples with rhubarb and ginger.

VEGETABLES

Root vegetables, like sweet potatoes, turnips, beets, carrots, fennel, and ginger, are all in season during the winter. Leafy greens like kale, and swiss chard are also great options. Adding stalks like rhubarb and celery to your juice will make the juice taste crisp and fresh. Try pairing kale with cucumber, ginger, apples, and lemon for a delightful green juice.

EXTRAS

Adding spices like cardamom, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, star anise, and turmeric does not only assist your body with digestion, but it also helps fight inflammation, relieve nausea, ease pain, and provide many more health benefits. For a cozy alternative to apple juice, juice apples and lemons and add some cinnamon and ground cloves. Serve warm.

TIPS

  • Don’t remove the skin from your fruits or veggiesβ€” they contain many nutrients that are beneficial for you! Instead, wash them well beforehand.

  • Leafy greens (like kale) have lower water content. Juicing them with something with high water content (such as oranges or apples) will help prevent them from sticking to your juicer.

  • If your juice is too bitter, add some fruit! A little will go a long way.

Happy juicing!

Love, Marcel Ardani
