August 26: National Dog Day

The name of National Dog Day says it all - we celebrate our dogs on this holiday! Like Colleen’s other holidays, this one honors our dogs and encourages adoption for those seeking a canine companion. Puppy mills are often the origin of purebred dogs, and aside from obvious ethical and moral issues, they're susceptible to sickness and disease. When you adopt your dog from a shelter or rescue group, not only will you be helping a dog in need of a home, but you will also be helping the fight against puppy mills.
National Dog Day is a great chance to adopt a dog of your own since shelters tend to have the highest intake of dogs during the summertime. This holiday encourages and reminds people each year to adopt, donate, and love their pets more, thereby helping dogs in need of a family find their forever homes.
National Dog Day is observed every year on August 26th. Colleen chose that date because it was the year she adopted her first dog when she was just ten years old. National Dog Day is estimated to have resulted in more than a million dogs being adopted in the United States since its introduction!
